As the weather changes once again, it’s an exciting time to be in the Czech Republic. Did you know that Prague has more greenspace than any other European city? But sometimes, a quick stroll through a small park isn’t quite enough. Good news: there are places accessible by Prague’s public transportation system where you can spend a day hiking or trail running through the wilderness.
Vysehrad fortress, often called. “The Other Castle,” is one of the oldest structures in Prague, with legends predating its construction— many of them are hard to believe, including horses making spectacular jumps, hauntings, and mystical visions.
As the spring continues to be chilly and drizzly, it can be easy to fall into the trap of, “I’ll explore when the weather is nicer,” but you shouldn’t have to wait. There are plenty of indoor places that can give you a taste of Czech culture. One of the coolest and most local-feeling features of the city is just steps from the UPCES building: the passages of Nove Mesto.
Litoměřice is the trip that UPCES students are always most surprised by. It is the most authentically local place we take our students, which includes a visit to a historic chateau, lunch at a local restaurant, a tour of a wine cellar and a private tour with a local expat guide, Tony. We love seeing Tony every semester and had a chat with him so you can get to know him before you go.
Last week, UPCES students and staff had a fantastic lunch together, with a menu jam-packed with traditional Czech foods. Many of our favorites were on the menu and it was so much fun to watch students discover their own favorites. As the weather continues to be cold and rainy, it can be so comforting to pop into a Czech restaurant for a steaming bowl of gulaš and dumplings. Since our staff have all been in Prague for a while, we all have our favorites. Some of them, you tried last week-- others, you'll have to venture out and discover yourself!
